Where it started
Fernando Feijoo is an artist and printmaker whose practice spans several materials, formats and creative series.
-
The problem
A broad body of artwork requires clear categorisation and immersive presentation without making navigation or interaction more prominent than the work itself.
-
What framed the work
- Multiple media in one coherent structure
- The interface stays subordinate to the artwork
- A catalogue that can grow with new series and pieces
-
What it had to achieve
Build a distinctive digital portfolio that supports exploration across disciplines and individual artworks.
-
The solution
A visual-first portfolio with featured artwork, a dedicated works archive, discipline-based collections and detail views, supported by restrained interactive transitions.
-
Information architecture
The site is built around an artwork-first structure: a featured viewer introduces the work, a works archive groups pieces by discipline — prints, ceramics, sketchbooks and mixed media — and detail views let each series be explored. Navigation stays quiet so the artwork leads.
-
Visual & interaction design
A restrained layout, typography and motion keep attention on the artwork. Categories and series organise a large body of work without the interface competing with the pieces.
-
What it does
- Featured artwork
- A full-width viewer introduces a featured piece on the homepage.
- Prints
- A dedicated catalogue of prints organised within the works archive.
- Ceramics
- Ceramic work presented alongside the other disciplines.
- Sketchbooks
- Sketchbook and preparatory work grouped as its own discipline.
- Artist books and mixed media
- Additional formats and materials included in the body of work.
- Artwork navigation
- Discipline collections, listing and detail views support exploration across the catalogue.
-
Design & engineering decisions
- Artwork-first composition
- The design withdraws so the work and each series are the centre of attention.
- Category-based information architecture
- Grouping by discipline and series lets the catalogue grow without the interface ceasing to serve the work.
- Motion to enhance exploration
- Interactive transitions support browsing while remaining subordinate to the artwork.
-
Considered and rejected
- An interface-forward showcase
- A more demonstrative interface could have foregrounded the technology, but it would have competed with the artwork; the restrained structure keeps the pieces primary and the interaction exploratory.
-
Technical approach
Astro provides the static structure; WebGL and GSAP support the restrained interactive presentation without displacing the work.
